Highlands Horror Fest 2024

Highlands Horrorfest is a competitive film festival that features short works by filmmakers from the Appalachian Highlands and surrounding areas. The festival not only platforms horror films as an artistic genre but also commemorates the talents of local filmmakers. Highlands Horrorfest aims to highlight the Appalachian Highlands’ “rich cultural history, folklore, and natural beauty.” It returned for its third year on October 19 at the Wallace Theatre in downtown Johnson City for one night only.

The festival began in 2022, showcasing a small number of local filmmakers. In 2023, the Highlands Horrorfest Roadshow was created alongside the festival, providing inspiration, education, and networking opportunities through screenings and workshops run by locals in the industry. Highlands Horrorfest continues to grow and move toward the long-term goal of holding a multi-day event that celebrates the horror genre and the creativity of local artists through film, art, and music.

The awards presentation concluded the film festival. Prizes for participants included Best Student Film, Best Performance, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Practical FX, Best VFX, and the $1000 grand prize Best of the Fest. There were also interactive events such as a costume contest for attendees and more.
